Public training courses versus group on site training options

This is a common question that is asked when fielding inquiries from those responsible for organising training for a group of staff. These are some things you need to consider when deciding which way to go, how to get the outcome that best suits your business and a range of budgets. So I have decided to compile a list of pros and cons.


Public Training courses – Pros

1.      You have the ability to choose a range of courses that suit the ability and interest of the participant

2.      Just show up – You are provided with all the material and equipment. Just bring yourself.

3.      More date flexibility – course run on a range of dates that suit the participant and can be rescheduled by the participant at no penalty (of course with appropriate notice)

4.      There is usually a good vibe and energy in the class. The participants in most cases want to be there.

5.      People still running the business – if you can’t afford to have all your staff attending a training session at the same time then staggered public course enrolments is the way to go.


Public Training courses – Cons

1.      A mixed bag – Participants can enroll from the public meaning you can have a range of abilities and personalities within the one group. A lot of the time a good trainer can handle this however at times it can difficult to manage.

2.      Cost – can be less cost efficient when compared to onsite workplace courses especially for larger groups

3.      No customization – the course content is preset and may not be compatible with what the staff require or have an interest in.


Group Onsite training courses – Pros

1.      Ability to customise – you have the ability to select the topics you require as part of your job or select topics that you have an interest in.

2.      Cost effective – it can be more cost effective where you have a large group of people at a similar level of ability.

3.      Staff can work a little before and after training – return emails, calls etc as they are still in the office


Group Onsite training courses – Cons

1.      Shoehorning all staff in the one training session may not be wise where they are at different levels of ability

2.      You will need to ensure you have space and equipment to host the training (a lab, laptops, projector etc)

3.      No one is left to run the business. Does it suit the business to have all staff absent at the one to attend training?

4.      No date flexibility – if one or more of the group is unavailable then they shall miss the training and their window for professional development. For various reasons it can be difficult to ensure all can attend the one same date.
