I was asked to do online training for Excel Beginner as part of my workplace induction having no previous online training experience nor any Excel experience. My perception of online training was not positive, however, since it was a requirement for my new job I had to give it a chance!
Once I received my log in details I found the browser based courseware was very interactive, guided by a virtual animated trainer. I liked that I was able to set the pace to my liking replaying sections I didn’t understand. At the end of each section the courseware asks questions that you must get right before progressing to the next section. If your answer is incorrect it politely tells you so and asks you to try again. I had to keep my thinking cap on so you don’t click through sections mindlessly. You have to pay attention and stay switched on which is great. The courseware is so easy to use that I think a young child would be able to interact with the courseware with ease!
It was great that I could suspend the training and recommence at lunch, or during work when it was not very busy and at the end of the day when I could find some time.
After I completed the courseware I was keen to start my practice test. I was able to pass Excel beginner training with a mark of 87%! I was pleased with this outcome as I only went through the courseware once. The results also showed me which sections I had given the wrong answers in and I was able to go back, and revise each section that I had made mistakes in.
In the end it was an enjoyable experience and if given the chance I would not hesitate to complete further online training with different Microsoft programs!
The online interactive courseware and my 87% practice test gave me the confidence to complete a face to face public course. I was scheduled to do the Excel Intermediate public course shortly after completing the Beginner course online. Having completed the online interactive courseware as well as passing the practice test gave me the confidence to be in a room with other people knowing that I was at the right level for the face to face course.
On reflection online training is no so intimidating after all.
